Northwest Ohio's heavy clay soils are notoriously difficult to work with — they compact easily, drain poorly, and make it hard for roots to establish. Organic compost is one of the most effective ways to break up that clay and build a healthy soil structure over time. Our blends are formulated with local conditions in mind.

Built for this.

Springfield Compost was started by the team behind Aqualawn LLC — a Northwest Ohio lawn irrigation and landscaping company that has been serving the greater Toledo area since 2002. After years of specifying soil and compost for customer projects and watching quality vary wildly from supplier to supplier, we decided to control that variable ourselves.

Springfield Compost is purpose-built to produce and supply consistent, high-quality soil blends for homeowners, landscapers, and contractors across NW Ohio. We are a new operation — and that means every customer gets our full attention while we build our reputation one yard at a time.

We know this area. We know the clay. We know what it takes to grow something here.

For Residential Projects:

Garden Beds
Create rich, fertile beds that support strong root development and consistent vegetable or flower growth season after season.
Lawn Topdressing
Level uneven areas and feed your turf from the roots up — particularly effective in spring and early fall in NW Ohio.
Mulching
Retain soil moisture through summer heat, suppress weeds naturally, and give your beds a clean, finished look.
Soil Amendment
Break up heavy clay soils by working in organic matter that improves drainage, aeration, and long-term fertility.
Raised Garden Beds
Fill raised beds with a balanced blend designed for intensive gardening — good drainage, strong structure, and plenty of nutrients.

For Commercial Projects:

Landscaping
Supply reliable, consistent material for residential and commercial landscape installs — bulk quantities available for contractors.
Erosion Control
Stabilize disturbed slopes and slopes on new construction sites with nutrient-rich material that promotes fast ground cover establishment.
Athletic Fields
Improve playability, drainage, and turf recovery on sports fields with a blend designed for high-traffic use.
Construction Site Rehab
Restore disturbed soils after grading and foundation work — support vegetation growth and meet project closeout requirements.
Public Parks & Gardens
Supply bulk material for municipal planting projects, park renovations, and public green space installations.

Frequently asked questions

How much compost or topsoil do I need?

The standard formula is: length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (ft) ÷ 27 = cubic yards. For most lawn topdressing applications, a half-inch layer is plenty — about 1.5 cubic yards per 1,000 square feet. For raised beds or full garden fills, a 6–8 inch depth is typical. Not sure? Give us a call and we will help you calculate the right amount for your project.

What is the difference between compost and topsoil?

Topsoil is the upper layer of native soil — it provides physical structure and body. Compost is decomposed organic matter that adds nutrients, improves drainage, and feeds soil biology. Most projects benefit from both. Our blended mixes combine them in ratios designed to give you the best of each.

Can I pick up my order, or do you deliver?

Both. Onsite pickup is available at 1890A S Crissey Rd, Monclova, OH — Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Please call ahead or submit an estimate request so your order is ready when you arrive. We also offer bulk delivery across Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan, including Lucas, Wood, Fulton, Henry, and Ottawa counties in Ohio, and Monroe and Lenawee counties in Michigan. Contact us for delivery minimums and pricing.

Is your compost safe for vegetable gardens?

Yes — our blends are formulated to be safe for vegetable and herb gardens. Please contact us for specifics on compost sourcing and processing.

How is bulk compost different from bagged products at the hardware store?

Bagged compost is convenient but expensive by volume and often heavily processed. Bulk compost is more economical for any project larger than a few garden beds, and it tends to be fresher and less standardized for shelf stability. For any project over about 2 cubic yards, bulk is almost always the better value.

What should I bring for pickup?

For bulk material, you will need a truck, trailer, or other vehicle capable of hauling loose material. Call ahead or submit an estimate request so your order is staged and ready when you arrive. Our team can help load if needed. Not sure how much your vehicle can carry? We can help you figure out the right load size.

What is your minimum order for delivery?

Delivery minimums and pricing vary by location and project size. Contact us with your project details and we will provide a free estimate.
